Meath Hill 2-05 Blackhall Gaels 0-10
Last Saturday evening Meath Hill welcomed the arrival of Blackhall Gaels for Round 3 of the Division 2 All County A League. It was yet another cold and blustery night in the most north easterly area of Meath.
Meath Hill being aided with the wind got off to the better start, with them enjoying most of the possession in the early stages. After a couple of poor wides in the opening minutes, Pauric Smith got the Hill off the mark with a point in the 4th minute. Blackhall soon started to get into the game, with them winning more of the ball at midfield. They reeled off the next three points of the game to lead by two points with 10 minutes gone. Meath Hill closed the gap with a pointed free from Ian Malone, and by the 19th minute were back level with a well taken Pierce McGrath point. The game changing period was to come between the 23rd and 26th minutes. After a good move by the Meath Hill attack, the Blackhall Gaels goalkeeper was alleged to have committed a foot block and the referee awarded Meath Hill a penalty. Pierce McGrath calmly stepped up to spot and slotted the ball into the bottom left. Then on the 26th minute, Jason Yorke played a good long pass to Ian Malone who fisted the ball by the oncoming Blackhall goalkeeper. Meath Hill now led by 2-03 to 0-04 and seemed to be in control. Both sides traded another point each before the break, the Meath Hill point again coming from the foot of Pierce McGrath.
Half Time Score: Meath Hill 2-04 Blackhall Gaels 0-05
With Meath Hill seeming to be in control by the end of the first half, they were hoping to build on this in the second half. However, it was Blackhall who got off to the better start and slotted over the first two scores of the half. With momentum now swinging Blackhall’s way, Meath Hill were finding it hard to hold onto possession and were unable to create any treats on the Blackhall goal. By the 46th minute Blackhall had closed the gap to a solidary point. Pierce McGrath ended a scoreless period of 18 minutes for the Hill after a quickly taken free from Chris Yorke. This was to be Meath Hill’s last score of the game. With Blackhall completely dominating the possession in the closing stages they were only able to close the gap to a single point, partly due to some wayward shooting in front of the Meath Hill goal. The referee finally blew the final whistle in the 64th minute and Meath Hill held on for a one point victory.
