With an early start to this year’s Tailteann Cup competition, Meath Hill got their campaign off to a great start with a comprehensive win at home to St. Mary’s.
Meath Hill got out of the blocks quickly with their opening score coming from a pointed free by Ian Malone inside the 1st, quickly followed by another point from Pierce McGrath. With Meath Hill gaining the upper hand all over the field, they were able to hold onto possession with at their ease. After a good period of possession, Jason Yorke slotted the ball over the bar in the 5th minute to widen the margin, 0-03 to 0-00. With Meath Hill still dominating the middle third of the field, they were then able to spilt open the St. Marys’s defence at their ease. By the quarter way stage of the game, Meath Hill weere leading by 0-07 to 0-00, courtesy of three more points from Ian Malone (0-02 frees) and a Chris Yorke 45. The second quarter was to be even more fruitful for the Meath Hill men. Between the 18th and 24th minute they added another 1-03 from play, started with a point from Pauric Smith. Donnacadh then slotted home their first goal of the game, finishing off a very good passing move through the St. Mary’s defence. With the St. Mary’s defence with no answer to the Meath Hill attack Chris Yorke hit the next three points of the game. The final score of the half for Meath Hill came after a brilliant hand passing move, which started inside their own half and ended with Jason Yorke burying the ball into bottom left corner of the St. Mary’s net. It wasn’t until the 32nd minute of the first half that St. Mary’s finally got off the mark.

Meath Hill started the second half as quickly as the first with Jason Yorke’s second goal of the game inside the first 60 seconds of the half. After a good block from the St. Mary’s goalkeeper the ball ricocheted back into the hands of Jason and he again blasted the ball into the empty net. With Meath Hill taking their foot off the gas temporarily, St. Mary’s got the next two points of the game. With a scoreless period of 10 minutes for Meath Hill and after a couple of poor wides, Jason Yorke ended another good move to put the ball over the bar. Meath Hill continued the rout with another four unanswered points, three from Jason Yorke to bring his personal tally to 2-05 and one from full back Ryan Owens. With the game well and truly over and a better spell from St. Mary’s, they got the next two points of the game. On the 58th minute Tommy Rooney hit the final score of game to complete a victory of 3-17 to 0-05.
With a great team performance, Meath Hill can take confidence into their next game in the Division 2 A League in a couple of weeks’ time against Nobber.
